What is Reiki?

Our bodies are enlivened by a magnificent system of complex chemical reactions and electrical currents – we are vibrating, energetic beings.  We are energy and we are surrounded by energy.  So often the cumulative demands of our daily lives begin to tax us, leaving us with little time to calm, to focus, to relax, and restore.   Reiki provides us with an access point to connect with the universal energy that surrounds us which supports, deep relaxation and rest. This enhances our body’s natural ability to heal.

According to the Center for Reiki Research, “Reiki is a form of energy medicine or biofield therapy that reduces stress and promotes health.”  Reiki is an energy technique that originated in Japan more than 100 years ago.  The word Reiki is frequently translated to mean spiritually-guided universal life force energy.   This energy flows through the Reiki Practitioner’s hands to the client and promotes a sense of relaxation and stress reduction.   Reiki is a technique that complements the care you receive from your licensed health care provider and is not meant to replace or interfere with that care.

The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine recently published a research paper A Large-Scale Effectiveness Trial of Reiki for Physical and Psychological Health. The purpose of the study was to measure the effect of a single Reiki session in a non-clinical setting. The study included 1,411 Reiki sessions that were conducted across the United States by Reiki Masters.  Reiki clients, who agreed to participate in the study, completed a survey before their Reiki session and after their session. The researchers reported significant improvements in all outcome measures. The results of this research trial conclude that a single session of Reiki improves multiple indicators related to physical and psychological health (Dyer, et al. 2019.) What to Expect During Your Reiki Session

Before we begin your Reiki treatment, we will spend some time discussing your intentions for the session, areas where you would like to focus, and any questions that you may have.   Reiki is administered through the hands of the Reiki Practitioner.  The practitioner’s hands may be placed gently on the body or may be held just above the body – this is the choice of the client and we will discuss your preference before we start your treatment. During a Reiki session, the body is not manipulated as it is during massage or acupressure.  Clients remain fully clothed with shoes often removed.  During the Reiki treatment, soft music will be playing or you may opt for quiet.  In most cases you will be laying on a table on your back.  If lying down isn’t comfortable or getting up on a table is difficult, you may also choose to sit in a chair.

Everyone’s experience during a Reiki session is different.  Many people report a sense of deep relaxation, calm, warmth, and well-being.  Some report seeing colors or shapes, while other people fall asleep. Some people may even experience an emotional release.   The experience is unique to each individual and may vary from treatment to treatment.

Meet Your Practitioner – Donna Beifus

Welcome, I am glad that you are here. Our mission, through Divine Light Reiki, is to offer the transformative benefits of Meditation, and Reiki through heartfelt teaching and inspired Reiki treatments.
I have a deep appreciation and an abiding respect for my meditation practice and it is integral to each day. Meditation has been a catalyst for transformative change in my life. Within weeks after learning to meditate, I knew that someday I would become a Meditation Teacher. Everything in my life improved after I began my meditation practice so I wanted to be able to share meditation with others who would like to learn. I am very proud to be a Chopra Certified Meditation Teacher.
My first experience with Reiki was more than 20 years ago when I was expecting my first child. Late in my pregnancy, I began to have sciatic nerve pain that was limiting my ability to sit, walk or even feel comfortable. There was not much that was available in terms of traditional medical treatment because I was pregnant. I learned that the woman that I was seeing for child birth education classes was a Reiki Master. She offered to provide Reiki to relieve the pain that I was experiencing. I had never heard of Reiki and was skeptical at first. After one brief session, my discomfort from sciatic nerve pain was relieved!
I would love to say that this experience marked a change in my life at that moment, however, that is not what happened. I was not quite ready to pursue more with Reiki; although, I never forgot that incredible first experience.
I have been a Registered Nurse for more than thirty years and for much of that time, I have served in leadership roles. Being a nurse and being a leader has been a great privilege in my life. Being a wife and a mother has been a gift and a blessing. While I had always been grateful for my many blessings, I still struggled with balancing my personal life, my professional life, and my self-care. Twenty years after that first Reiki session, my struggle to find balance was taking a toll.
In 2017, I pursued formal meditation instruction and finally learned to meditate which has now developed into my daily meditation practice. Meditation has served as a catalyst in my life. In the stillnness of meditation, I began to remember… and understand more about myself.  The following year, I saw a notice about an upcoming Reiki class and immediately decided to enroll (this is something that I never do!) After experiencing Reiki during the first class, I felt drawn toward Reiki and had a desire to learn more.
Since that time I have completed course work to become a Usui/Tibetan Reiki Master Practitioner/Teacher and a Usui /Holy Fire® III Reiki Ryoho Master and a Registered Holy Fire® III Karuna Reiki® Master. I am a Professional Member of the Reiki Membership Association. Studying Reiki and practicing with this profound energy on a daily basis has been completely transformative. As I have continued to meditate and have learned more about Reiki, I have also learned more about myself and have created a balance that supports my energy and total well-being.
Through my Reiki studies I became been enchanted by power of sound and its ability to create almost immediate shifts in energy.
I pursued additional course work involving sound and I have completed a 100 hour certification as a Crystal Bowl Facilitator through the Soul of Yoga Sound Institute.  I am a Reiki Drumming™ Practitioner.  I am a member of the Sound Healers Association. I have added the transcendent properties of crystals and sound to the services that I offer at Divine Light Reiki. I am a Reiki Crystal Healing Practitioner.  I have completed advanced training and am a Guided Imagery Practitioner.   I always have my next class planned and I look forward to sharing my knowledge and skills with the clients and students that I serve.
